ROBOT ON OUR BOARD humour
kvakutty
Cartoon is a welcome feature for any media. We in Sulekha are lucky to have a cartoonist amongst us, in V-S-Gopal.
Putting in black and white ( now in colors due to computer technology) one’s thoughts or feelings is child’s play for many.
But drawing cartoon is a different cup of tea. When I draw a dog it looks like a goat and vice versa. That is what others say. I don’t know why. To say the least this is unfair!
The provocation for writing this blog is the cartoon by V-S-Gopal entitled:
" Sir, this is a new Government Circular we have received.
It says we should also take one of the robots on our Board of Directors”
I am only recording some stray thoughts which occurred to me on seeing this cartoon.
Though meant as joke, this should be taken seriously!!! Advantages are many:
Now that the circular has been “ issued”, many queries will be raised. Government will have to set up one or more committees in any case. So I am not going into details.
What about sex of robot director? Legal doubts may crop up.
When a good decision is taken all directors take credit for that. When decision goes wrong every director dissociates himself from it. They say “Success claims many fathers, but failure is an orphan.” Now robot director can be blamed whenever things go wrong.
Number of robot directors should be limited and they should not be allowed to form “ unions” or “secret associations”. Probably they can be programmed as required. But there will be demand for more robot directors in due course. Care should be taken to ensure that they do not overtake human directors in intelligence and/or wisdom.
National security should not be compromised.
Once a chairman said “ Gentlemen, now that the Directors’ Report on Annual Accounts is taken as read, lunch may be taken as eaten. We can disperse.”
In a situation like that robot will not raise even a formal protest.
If more robot directors are appointed problem of quorum may be eased.
Privileges and responsibilities of robot directors should be clearly defined.
Much depends on decision making power given to robot director.
Care should be taken so that human directors do not lose their jobs, lunches and sitting fees!
It is in Public Sector Boards that the need for robot directors will be keenly felt.
Importing robot directors will be better.
I stop here as Govt. will have to appoint committees in any case.
So, we Sulekhites need not lose our sleep on this matter.
But members who are so inclined may come up with their ideas. It is fun!
