GOD SEES THE TRUTH, BUT WAITS

Merchant Aksenov decided to go on a business tour
His wife pleaded with him not to go as she had a very
Bad dream the previous night. Aksenov ignored her
Plea and went. On the way he met another merchant.
They traveled together; checked into an inn for the
Night. They spent time drinking and retired to sleep.
Aksenov woke early in the morning. Letting his
Companion to sleep, he resumed his journey alone.
On the road he was stopped by a policeman who was
Investigating a murder. Aksenov’s bag was searched.
Strange to say a bloody knife was found in his bag.
His plea that he was not the murderer was ignored.
Poor Aksenov was sentenced and was to be sent to
Siberia. His wife came and saw him. She found his
Hair graying from shock. He was sent to Siberia.
He resigned to his fate, spending time in prayers.
Being a good man he won the respect of all. Jailors.
And prisoners all liked him. One day along with
Some prisoners, one Makar was also brought in..
After overhearing conversations among prisoners
Aksnov came to know Makar had committed the
Murder for which he was being blamed .But when
Aksenov asked him direct, Makar simply denied.
Makar was now planning his escape from jail.He
Was digging a tunnel..Though Aksenov knew, he
Did not report to the police about this development.
This caused a change of heart in Makar. He confessed
To Aksenov , that it was he who killed the merchant.
Aksenov felt a big burden had been lifted off his mind.
Makar told the police also that he was the murderer.
Police started taking steps for release of Aksenov.
But Aksenov had died peacefully, just before he could
Be released from jail, where he spent twenty six years.

Close
lakshmi,
After long wait to be declared innocent was
for him something more precious than life
itself. He knew this would happen. But we
readers feel that it was too sad an ending.

like Tolstoy, you too have kept it simple and direct
Dying in peace is also a kind of freedom even if he died in prison.......the murderer's confession set him free forever......
